Replacing UniCare with Another Illinois Health Insurance Plan

By Mike Novelli

On October 27 2009, UniCare Health Insurance Company of the Midwest, UniCare Life & Health Insurance Company, and UniCare Health Plans of the Midwest Inc. (UniCare) released a notification to the Department of Insurance with their plans to depart the individual, commercial, small and large group Illinois health insurance markets.

Subsequent to the renewal date, finding comparable coverage is the priority for most policyholders, whose coverage is due to expire.  UniCare is required to provide a 180-day notice. As a result, families and individuals with a renewal date of February 1, 2010 do not have to find another Illinois health insurance plan.

However, policyholders with renewal dates after April 27, 2010 will need to find new coverage. Although, consumers should expect to pay higher premium rates, they should try to seek comparable benefits in a new Illinois health insurance policy:

• Medical coverage that does not impose any pre-existing limitations or has a •6-month pre-existing condition waiting period

• Similar exclusions to the original UniCare plan

• Waived underwriting

• Comparable physician co payments, hospitalization benefits, pharmaceutical coverage.

Since the aforementioned benefits are a bit confusing to understand, obtaining numerous medical quotes from a licensed insurance professional is key to finding a suitable Illinois health insurance plan. President of Illinois Life and Health Mike Novelli, advises consumers to consult an insurance agent / broker who explains the following terms:

  • An out-of-pocket analysis
  • Medical care coverage (physician visits, hospitalization, etc.)
  • Lifetime medical limitations and included benefits

As a result, numerous medical quotes are necessary to compare and find coverage, which covers ones medical needs, accommodating their budget.
